When delivering the fifth letter to Stern, he states that he knows the cypher because "'Love' is in 'Havelock.'"
While that statement is true, we're unfortunately attempting to find the encoding key and not the decoding key; what we need is for "Havelock" to be in "ABCDEFG," which is, of course, not true.
The partial encoding key we produce looks more like "I _ O _ E _ _ A _ _ D F _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ S _ _ _ _" instead of the "_ L O V E _ _ _......" like it's implied to. It's possible for Stern to have anticipated the exact message "ILOVEYU...," but this contradicts the implied importance of "love" in "Havelock," because the only letter in "love" relevant to the message is 'e'.
