Improbable Island Message of the Day (MoTD)
Slowed pace of development for a little while
Hey folks, you might have noticed that I've not been around on the Island as much since September, and when you do see me around in chat it's only for minutes at a time and I'm often too rushed to hang out and chat with y'all. I'd like to take a moment to apologise for that and let you all know what's going on.
Nerv started virtual kindergarten at the same time as Emily started a programming bootcamp, which means that most of my day is now supervising a kid who's been reading and writing for three years as she does worksheets on how to recognise the letter "E." It's been a frustrating experience for all involved. One day a week her grandma comes over so I can go and fix pinball machines for a local arcade, but that's pretty much the extent of my money-earning activities at the moment. All this means that the Island has had to go back to being an evenings-and-weekends thing, without the benefit of a 9-to-5 job to bring in funds, meaning right now I'm low on money and extra low on time.
The plan to address this is basically to try and replicate the Island's dev environment on a laptop and trust that Nerv can continue with her worksheets with minimal supervision when offered the carrot of playground time, leaving me to get an occasional ten minutes of development in. Emily's coding bootcamp runs until December, and Nerv will hopefully be doing in-person school after vaccines for the under-12's are approved, assuming cases decline.
I just wanted to let you all know that the current slow pace of development is temporary. Until things calm down again I'm going to pause work on big, long, ambitious projects and concentrate on small bugfixes and quality-of-life improvements like the empty-bandolier prompt I made last week.
Sorry for the bad news, and have fun,
